Their mission statement, which can be read on the Bluetooth SIG official website (www.bluetooth.com), reads: “Strengthen the Bluetooth brand by empowering SIG members to collaborate and innovate, creating the preferred wireless technology to connect diverse devices.”

So, the obvious question is: How does one become an SIG member?

Membership in the Bluetooth SIG is intended for any corporation that uses the technology for Bluetooth accessories and products. All members assist in the progress and development of the technology, and receive a series of advantages for being members.

Some of these advantages include access to Bluetooth.org, usage of Bluetooth wireless specification in products, ability to use Bluetooth trademarks on products as well as through marketing, free access to the Bluetooth Brand Equity Study, selected market research reports from InMedica, and free logo posting in the Bluetooth SIG Member Network. There is an annual fee involved, a financial obligation given in good faith, knowing the Bluetooth SIG is a non-profit organization.

To become a member of the Bluetooth SIG, a company must register through the official Bluetooth website. The first step is becoming an “adopter member,” which is free. After that is completed, the head of your company is encouraged to send an e-mail to member.relations@bluetooth.com. After this, the applying company is taken into consideration for membership.

Currently, the Bluetooth SIG has over 13,000 companies within its membership, though the most influential are the “promoter members,” which includes Ericsson Technology Licensing (the founder of Bluetooth technology), Intel, Lenovo, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia, and Toshiba.

Why Settle for Just One Keypad?

O2 have recently announced a new smartphone the o2 XDA Atmos – a Windows Smartphone with pretty typical features, but a not so typical keypad layout. Now o2 brought one of the first Windows smartphones to the market back in 2002 – the original o2 XDA, so they obviously know what they are doing in the smartphone area.

However, the only thing that really sets the o2 XDA Atmos out from the rest of the smartphone crowd is the slightly crazy keypad…or should that be keypads? The o2 XDA Atmos has a slide out qwerty keypad for the traditional typists out there, but it also uses up some of the front panel to add a normal mobile phone keypad.

There is no doubt that the styling of the o2 XDA Atmos will appeal to some people as it means the phone can be used as a smartphone and a normal phone seamlessly. But I do think that there will be quite a few people who will not like the fact that the screen has been made smaller to allow for the second keypad, it is just 2.4 inches compared to the 3.5 inches on the Apple iPhone.

As for the other features, we are just in pretty standard territory, 2 megapixel camera, microSD card, Windows Mobile 6, push email, Microsoft Office and a whole host of connection methods including HSDPA, 3G, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and EDGE.
